Te Hokioi - Our Kaitiaki

ACC Registered Service Provider for  Rongoā Māori

Hokioi Therapy Limited provides Rongoā Māori healing and rehabilitation services for individuals recovering from sports injuries, workplace accidents, and other physical or emotional challenges. Our holistic approach draws on traditional Māori healing practices such as mirimiri, romiromi, rongoā rākau, karakia, and kōrero to support recovery and restore balance to the body, mind, and wairua (spirit). We also operate as an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) service provider, offering Rongoā Māori sessions through employer wellbeing initiatives—ensuring cultural, spiritual, and physical support in the workplace. Our Rongoā Māori services can be accessed directly or through leading EAP networks including Clearhead, Tellus, and Vitae, making it easier for individuals and organisations to integrate traditional healing into modern health and wellbeing pathways.

We've dedicated ourselves to serving the well-being of our extended family, our whānau, within the community. While our roots are firmly in the Waikato region, our commitment extends across the Auckland Region, and our reach has taken us as far as Otaki to Ahipara.

Hokioī Therapy NZ also provides EAP Counselling, Hapūtanga (pregnancy) services and Cultural Supervision to staff.

Since 2018, we've dedicated ourselves to serving the well-being of our extended family, our whanau, within the community. While our roots are firmly in the Waikato region, our commitment extends across the Auckland Region, and our reach has taken us as far as Otaki to Ahipara.

I've been honored to collaborate with esteemed individuals like Papa Hohepa Delamere and Manu Korewha. I recall a particular instance during year 2000 when they reached out to me at an unconventional hour, around 3 am, while parked outside my home. They needed a third companion for a significant endeavor down the road. It's memories like these that remind me of the profound connections and shared purpose that bind us.

In the face of the ongoing pressures on healthcare services, characterized by extended waiting times and staff shortages, we find solace in our ability to offer temporary support until these challenges are alleviated.

Just as mauri represents a lifelong journey, we understand that we are all integral parts of something greater. And so, with this understanding, our journey begins anew.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do I need an ACC claim to access your services?

Yes. To receive mirimiri / romiromi under rongoā Māori through ACC, you must have an active and approved ACC claim.

What types of injuries does ACC cover for rongoā Māori?

ACC may approve rongoā Māori services for a range of injury-related conditions, including musculoskeletal injuries, chronic pain, and rehabilitation support. Approval is determined by ACC on a case-by-case basis.

Do I need a referral from my GP or specialist?

See your GP if you are injured to make an ACC claim. You can contact ACC directly and request rongoā Māori services. ACC will advise if any additional information is needed.

Koha-Based Community Services Process - How it Works

Can I access Hokioi Therapy if I’m not covered by ACC?

Yes. We offer a small number of koha-based mirimiri / romiromi sessions for people in the community who may not have ACC funding. These sessions are offered in line with our kaupapa of manaakitanga, whanaungatanga, and cultural wellbeing.

What is koha?

Koha is a voluntary gift given from the heart. There is no set fee—koha reflects your own circumstances and intention, and is a way to support the mahi of Hokioi Therapy while nurturing the community.

Are these sessions the same as ACC treatments?

Yes. The care, respect, and tikanga Māori of the sessions are the same. The difference is that koha-based sessions are not reported to ACC and are offered outside funded care.

How do I book a koha-based session?

Simply contact us directly to discuss your situation. We will advise if a koha-based session is available and suitable at that time.

Ngati Whatua Marae - A day of Romiromi and hapūtanga to support whānau

Our donation-based clinics, via Te Uenuku Whakawhiti Roopu

(you can find this page on facebook) or known as "koha based clinics" are held in West Auckland bi monthly, typically at the Corbans Estate Arts Centre. These sessions are open to anyone available on Saturdays and looking to book a 30-minute session. How does this work? - Koha is koha, whether you pick some veges from your garden, rocked up with a plate of boil up, dropped a gold coin in the Kite. Anything is considered a koha.

Many of our community members view these clinics as a safe and welcoming space to gather on the weekends before heading out for a well-deserved lunch. We make an effort to prioritize sessions for hapūtanga (pre/postnatal pregnancy) when possible, but this depends on the response from expecting mothers and their families once we advertise these events on our Facebook page. So, the sooner you respond, the better.

Outside of these scheduled events, we often operate from our home-based setup. You can make bookings through email, Facebook Messenger, or text. If you prefer to call, please leave a message, and we'll get back to you, keeping in mind that we have other work commitments.

For ACC referrals, a purchase order is usually required before scheduling an appointment, although we understand that each case is unique, and we can work out a solution depending on your current circumstances. You'll receive a text reminder one day before your appointment.

If you need to cancel, please do so at least 24 hours in advance. Wishing you all a fantastic week, whanau!
